Pope John Paul II visited to Miami on September 10-11, 1987, during his second tour of the United States. Pope John Paul II arrived at Miami International Airport, where he was greeted by President Ronald Reagan and his wife. He then traveled to St. Mary’s Cathedral, where he formally met Archbishop Edward A. McCarthy from the Archdiocese of Miami and was greeted by a cheering crowd. He traveled to St. Martha’s Church to meet with representatives of the nation’s priests and later met up with President Reagan and his wife at the historic South Florida estate of James Deering, Vizcaya Museum and Gardens. Afterward, he paraded with Archbishop McCarthy down Biscayne Boulevard. On his second day in Miami, Pope John Paul II met up with American Jewish leaders, toured the Miami’s Center for Fine Arts, and celebrated mass at Dade County Youth Fairgrounds. This exhibit draws from The Voice photographic newspaper archives in the Ana Rodriguez-Soto Collection (part of the Archdiocese of Miami archives) and from historic issues of The Voice newspaper.
